about

it's not the art that has to follow the media..
the media has to follow the art.

media and art follow whatever we want it to follow.

The idea of the hellozine came up in 2001 when photographer Alexander Basile and graphic designer Lutz Erian grew tired of servicing the cage of editorial contents of magazines and industry. Bored by the daily drag, they started to infrequently publish independent photographic series online. In a time of highly animated, flash-based websites the duo went the opposite route. Based on a purist design and an one way navigation decidedly avoiding external links, it was their idea to show less, leaving the observer with light visual breeze. From 2002 to 2007 several issues were published, along with some advertising for the hellozine in relevant print media.

After publishing two award winning books by Alexander Basile they decided to transform the concept to a paper magazine, at the same time changing it from featuring their work exclusively to inviting different artists from all over the world.

Of course the basic thoughts remain the same: No limitations whatsoever, meaning that each time one selected artist gets the possibility to work with the medium and use it in total free way of expression. Amount of pages, format and quality are subject to the artist‘s decision, based on the assumption that not the art has to follow the media but the media has to follow the art. This process implies a switch of format and material in every issue, giving each selected artist the opportunity to work with the media instead of just working in the media. Each issue is produced in a small amount and made available in selected bookshops and through the website itself.
