An exhibition at the Sofiski Arssenal the Museum for contemporary art Sofia from 11 January to 17 February 2013. Opening 10 January 6p.m.

NYC|C
NYC|C Located directly at the south entrance to Cologne’s Südbahnhof [South
Station], artist Alexander Basile operates a small art space with a discerning
programme. On the occasion of plan12, together with Oliver Tielsch he has mounted
an impressive exhibition project that almost seems to be a festival within a festival.
He depicts skateboarding as an urban culture of appropriation with multiple avenues
of influence, both on artistic practice and on the development of global trends – from the beginnings in the 1970s to this day, from New York City to Cologne: ‘New York is considered a major stem cell for an urban phenomenon with international reach. For generations of ambitious city dwellers, the urban myth of skateboarding has become a form of expression for individuals’ own worldview – as art, protest and zeitgeist. Against this backdrop, NYC.C reflects the influence of subculture and subcultural actors on mainstream movements. In this respect, skateboarding serves as a key to a world that is fundamentally involved in shaping and setting visual and architectural codes in the 21st century.’ Basile and Tielsch have made a series of inner-city locations into temporary stages. The centre is the exhibition, Around A Town (eine Nacherzählung) by Johannes Wohnseifer in SSZ Sued, where a selection of photographs will be premiered that were shot during the spectacular performance
Backworlds/Forwords, a joint project realised by Wohnseifer in collaboration with artist and skateboarder Mark Gonzales 14 years ago in the Museum Abteiberg in
Mönchengladbach. Ten large-area poster displays will also become art locations in the public space: here visitors can view pictures by photographers Todd Jordan , Jonathan Mehring, Gerhard Stochl, Mike O’Meally, Giovanni Reda and Charlie Samuels, all taken between 1975 and 2010 in their New York surroundings. The lattermost address, directly at Hans-Böckler-Platz, is also the location of a NYC|C stand offering information on the artists and locations. The stand
is open from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. each day. All of this will be accompanied by
lectures by researchers of the urban space and other experts including Johannes
Marent, Christian Peters, Caroline Philipp and Stefan Schwinghammer, combined with films by Pontus Alv, Larry Clark and Gordon Matta-Clark. Of course skateboarding as practice is on offer as well: on 23 September, Dom Skateboarding e.V. will invite guests to Skateplaza KAP686, designed in 2011 by metrobox architekten, not only for a lecture and discussion devoted to the history of their development but also to a joint session featuring international professional skateboarders.
